Civil War Research

As with every novel I write, I accumulate pages and pages of research notes. At the end of the day, I have far more information and knowledge than what ever goes into the story. The notes pertaining to “Spirit of the Rebellion” are no exception.
I loved doing the research for this book and most especially the research concerning the Wisconsin 15th regiment, under the command of Hans Christian Heg—the only all Scandinavian regiment in the Union army. The names of their companies reflected the pride of their heritage. We have Olaf's Rifles, the Norway Bear Hunters, the Norway Wolf Hunters, Odin's Rifles, and the Scandinavian Mountaineers to name a few. My favorite quote concerning this regiment?
"They are amongst the best and the bravest of our soldiers. Descendants of the sturdy Vikings of medieval times, they have in the long lapse of years lost none of that daring valor, power of endurance, and remarkable coolness in times of excitement, which characterized their ancestors. Next to bravery, their most marked quality is calmness. Always cool and collected, they act with the same deliberation and forethought in the trying hours of danger as in the transactions of every-day life. Temperate and virtuous, obedient and well disciplined, they are in every respect model soldiers, and challenge the admiration and respect of all whose good fortune it is to mingle with them." (Annals of the Army of the Cumberland, 1864). Is it any wonder that Captain Tristan Jordahl is part of this wonderful regiment?
The research concerning the Battle of Chickamauga also proved quite interesting. For as stated in the story, someone did indeed report a gap in the line to Major General William Rosecrans. When he moved some of his soldiers to fill the imaginary gap, he handed Lieutenant General James Longstreet the means to prevail. This incident figures prominently in the story of Tristan’s betrayal.
In reference to the Civil War letter, from a soldier to his wife, which Shae reads to Tristan… I have in my possession, copies of several letters that an ancestor wrote to his wife during this terrible conflict. They are very sweet and very tender. I made every effort to emulate his manner of speech and capture some of his emotion when I wrote the letter.
So! I invite you to come along with Captain Tristan Jordahl and Shae Lynn Montgomery as they unravel the mystery surrounding his murder and the accusation of treason, in that country church in Tennessee, shortly after the battle of Chickamauga.

Spirit of Rebellion
By Deborah K Peterson
Blurb:
Souls touch and emotions flare when a historian and an embittered spirit form an unlikely alliance to investigate the centuries-old riddle surrounding his death…

Ready for a fresh chapter in her life, Shae Lynn Montgomery accepts a job translating a cache of Civil War documents from Wisconsin’s famous Norwegian regiment. The assignment takes her to Chickamauga’s haunted Starling Plantation and face-to-face with a handsome captain—its angry ghost in residence.

Tristan Jordahl, falsely accused of treason, has no use for the living—not even the lovely translator invading his home. Despite Tristan’s best efforts to frighten her, Shae Lynn refuses to leave, and reluctantly, Tristan enlists her help to clear his name. But as they grow closer to the truth—and to each other—an evil spirit makes it clear he will do anything to stop them.

Can a love that transcends time overcome all obstacles?

Excerpt:
“You’ve got to let me in, you have to let me explain, please,” she begged through the barrier that separated them.  “I swear on everything dear to me, I’m not moving from this spot until you do.  Do you hear me?  I’m not leaving!”
“I am not interested in anything you have to say,” he growled back.
“I don’t care.  I’m staying right here until you hear me out!” she shouted.
As the minutes ticked by, the Captain tried desperately to ignore her presence, but finally, his shoulders slumped in defeat.  The chiming of the clock told him over an hour had passed since Shaelynn obstinately decreed her intention to remain in the small hallway until she said what she wanted to say.  He hoped her wet clothes and the trauma of her earlier experience, would force the issue otherwise.  But true to her word, she still waited outside his door.
Stubborn little hellion
With a sigh of resignation, he opened the door and met her defiant gaze.  She stood against the opposite wall, with one foot resting against the baseboard.  Her arms wrapped tightly around her waist as if seeking warmth against her wet, torn clothing.  On top of all that, she shivered with the cold.  She looked so pathetic standing there.
“Shaelynn, you need to get into some dry clothes,” he said.  The words surprised him.  They weren’t anywhere near what he planned to say.  The soft tone didn’t match either.
Shae clenched her teeth and shook her head.  “Not until we’ve talked.”
